13 Tips for a Great Teach

3 minutes reading time

Planning and conducting a teach (topic block) should be well thought out to achieve the best learning outcome for participants. It's important to consider and meet the following criteria:

Define Goals – Set Teaching Objectives

For the motivation of seminar participants, it's crucial that the trainer clarifies the learning goal. They should ask themselves which key content participants need to learn. This should be written down for future reference.

Clearly Explain the Topic

The trainer should carefully plan the individual (sub)topics of a seminar. Using their previously created trainer guide, they can prepare effectively. It's important to explain the topic clearly and understandably for all participants. They can confirm understanding by asking participants for feedback.

Clarify Terms

The trainer should immediately clarify any terms that might be unfamiliar to participants. This prevents interruptions and keeps the teach on track. It also enhances the clarity of the session.

Introductory Chart/Slide

A prepared chart or slide is excellent for introducing a new teach. It can display the topic clearly for all participants. A relevant drawing could also be included. This introductory chart simplifies the start of a new topic and helps participants orient themselves within the seminar.

Cover All Basics / Build Motivation / Encourage Participation

After introducing the new topic, it's important to activate participants' motivation and willingness to participate. The art is to maintain their motivation. The trainer should consider the Cover all Basics.

Show Benefits / Describe Core Idea

  • When and why should I use it?

It's important to explain when and why the topic is useful. The trainer must clearly show the value of this teach for participants.

  • What can I connect it with?

Participants will wonder what the topic can be connected with. It's about finding out if the topic is useful professionally or personally.

Tell a Reference Story / Give an Example

It's beneficial if the trainer can use (personal) experiences during the teach. This makes the topic more tangible and relatable for participants.

Make Content Interactive / TCI

The teach should be interactive. Participants should be actively and dynamically involved. This can be done through games, direct participant engagement, short videos with discussions, and group work. Always consider Theme-Centered Interaction.

Document Everything

The trainer should document the teach's process. This allows them to refer back to it if needed. Participants also benefit from having a record of the teach. The trainer can create additional handouts from these documents. Participants receive all important information developed during the seminar.

Include Exercises

Exercises are crucial for the teach. They help participants better retain what they've learned by actively engaging with it rather than just listening. Review exercises at the end of a teach lead to a better learning effect.

Summarize the Topic

Just before the end of the block session, summarize the teach's topic. This summary can be done as a review exercise by the participants.

Conduct a Debriefing Session

A debriefing session at the end of the teach allows participants to reflect on the learning session. This can enhance the seminar's acceptance.

Give Participants an Action Task

An action task at the end of a teach is also valuable. The trainer should encourage participants to apply what they've learned in everyday life or work. To prevent forgetting, it's advisable to practice the knowledge regularly. The more often it's applied, the greater the learning effect.
